Fly fishing is truly one of the most interesting and exciting types of fishing. Its main interest is in that the process of fly fishing goes with passion and the extraction of fish turns into an active kind of recreation. It can even be attributed to the sport because of the culture and aesthetics of fishing as such which goes on the first place, but not of the weight of the caught fish. Everyone who has tried this impressive type of fishing can unexpectedly discover in themselves a talent for fly fishing.
Fly fishing gear
The main thing in fly fishing is the correct selection of gear. These include: reel, leader, rod (blank), fly line, jig.
With all this elements you can safely move on to becoming familiar with the tackle. You may also need some additional details such as:
A lightweight, convenient fishing rod, suitable for usage by novice flyers is the main element in the fly fishing gear.
There are various classes of fly fishing rods. Rod class denotes its stability – the higher the class, the more stable rod. An amateur of fly fishing of the initial level, as a rule chooses 6-7 class – this is usually enough to draw fish up to four kilograms from the water.
Fly fishing rods are made of 2 or 4 knees.
2 knee rods have a higher strength due to the fact that the number of their connecting elements is minimal.
4-knee rods are less reliable, but their advantage is in length.
The most frequent materials of which rods are made are: bamboo, carbon fiber, plastic.
When choosing the rod made of the presented materials, it is important to take into account its flexibility and relevance for such type of fishing.
Also it is necessary to consider the material and design of the handle. The most successful choice can be a handle made of balsa wood.
For fly fishing there are used automatic, multiplier, and conventional reels.
Beginners in fly fishing prefer conventional coils, which have a brake with a regulator. The brake can be chosen in any convenient design – with or without a ratchet. An important condition for proper operation of the brake is the tension of the fly line. After a strong jerk, pay attention to the fly line – it shouldn’t hang loosely. The weight balance between the rod and reel should also be observed.
It is required that the reel drum can accommodate up to 60 meters of fishing line with a diameter of 0.5 mm, located under the fly line. When choosing the number of fishing line you need to consider that in the coiled form the fly line should not touch the edges of the coil.
It should be noted that fly ine can be attributed to the most important and expensive element of fishing gear. It pretty quickly comes into disrepair – it happens that two fly lines are replaced in one fishing season. Fly lines are available in two versions: floating or sinking. It is better for a beginner to use a floating fly line – it is thrown easier than a sinking one.
Fly lines as well as fishing rods can be divided into classes. Fly line class is selected in accordance with the class of the rod. For example, if the rod has 4 or 5 class, the fly line should have the same class.
It is recommended to choose a light colored fly line – due to the contrast it is more noticeable in the water.
If the throwing was carried out in muddy water, the fly line must be cleaned. You can clean it with a tool that usually comes in the kit with a fly line.
The leader with a decreasing diameter of the fishing line is a component of fly fishing gear. Diameter’s reducing starts from 0.5 mm and tapers to 0.2 mm — the end of the larger diameter of the leader is attached to the fly line, and the fly is tied to the narrow end.
The narrowing of the leader is done as follows:
- fishing line diameter is 0.5mm – length of leader is 1m 25cm.
- fishing line diameter is 0.45 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.35 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.25 mm – length of leader is 15 cm.
- fishing line diameter is 0.2mm – length of leader is 0.6m.
Statistics show that the leader goes out to be 2.6m long, even in the case when the length of the rod is shorter than the length of the leader, a segment of 0.5mm thickness is excluded. With a stronger wind it is better to use short leaders therefore it is desirable that the leaders of different lengths are always in stock.
Fly fishing flies
A beginner fly fishing master should have two types of flies in his arsenal – dry and wet flies.
As to fly size is better to prefer 3.5, 4.5, 6. Beginners should not use smaller flies yet.
During the throwing it is not necessary to use a fly — a conventional cotton swab will be enough.
Since the flies have a rather high degree of wear they require a careful attitude. They should be dried properly after each fishing session.
It happens that the feathers of the fly stick together – in such case steam will help. You need to grab the fly with tweezers and hold it for some time over the steam.
Fly fishing technique
There are a couple of key fly fishing principles that should be followed.
The hardest part is throwing the bait. This action requires accuracy and exactness. There are many types of lessons in the Internet that will allow you to fully learn the correct technique of casting. But not only the theory is enough – it takes a long time to train and an experienced tutor is needed.
The next stage is the posting of the fly. It depends on the bait used and the fishing conditions. Keep the fly line strained trying not to tangle it otherwise the hooking will be ineffective.
Also do not forget that during fly fishing you don’t need to immediately pull out the fish – you should wait a while until the fish get a little tired. In such case the net, which you should always have with you, will be useful.
